What is a Board & Train?

Our Board & Train programs range from 2-5 weeks in length and are conducted at our facility in Halfmoon, New York! When learning new habits and behaviors, dogs need consistency. Our dog boot camp programs are designed for dogs 6 months of age and older. It allows our team of professional trainers to spend enough time with your dog to give them the structure and consistent training they need for you to bring home and continue to be successful!

If your puppy is under 6 months old, check out our Foundations Program!

We tailor each dog training camp program depending on the dog’s needs. Board & train focuses on, but is not limited to the following:

  • Beginner foundation training [sit, down, stay, heel, place, recall]
  • Behavior modification and diagnostic [fear & aggression]
  • Off leash foundation k9 training

Benefits of Our Doggy Boot Camp

With our Board & Train programs, your dog will benefit from training in private & group settings as well as off-location in realistic environments, and you, as the owner, will receive thorough education and updates tailored to your dog’s needs prior to your pup coming home. Our goal is to develop a dog who is more obedient, more confident, and most importantly has the ability to communicate clearly with their owner- and vice versa! Coming out of a program, most dogs can perform the instilled training with anyone, anywhere as concepts are continued to be applied at home and beyond.

Before your dog goes home, you will receive a private training session to ensure you as the owner leave with the proper tools & techniques to set your dog up for success.

What Makes UCA’s Board & Train Program Different?

How do I know what program is right for my dog, and how do I enroll?

Our training team will help you! The first step to book a program is a free phone consultation with one of our trainers to discuss your goals (and your dog!) in more detail. Text us at 518-729-7982 to book your phone consultation now!

Will my dog listen to every command after the program?

While our programs create a great base of knowledge and understanding for both you and your dog, consistency and routine at home after the program is extremely important. If your dog is not used to rules or following obedience cues at home, it will take them a bit of time and repetition to learn that what they have been taught also applies at home! With proper follow-through, your dog will continue to improve on their learned concepts. However, the most vital part of dog training at any age is consistency and dedication at home for life-long results.

Will my dog play with other dogs during the program?

That depends! We work with many behavioral cases, and in some instances dog interaction is not a safe option. Regardless, neutrality is our main focus. Pending your dog’s temperament and your goals, your dog may interact and play with certain dogs in our facility under strict monitoring. The well being and safety of every dog is of utmost importance. Aside from playing, forming a foundation of neutrality- a dog who is able to calmly exist with their owner while other dogs and people are in the vicinity, is essential!

Can off leash training or e-collar training be a focus during this program?

Yes! We do offer e-collar training for off-leash foundations and communication, however we do require 3 weeks or more for any e-collar introduction, as a foundation of obedience is a required pre-requisite to introduce the tool.

Board & Train Case Studies

Labradane: Murphy

Labradane: Murphy

Issue: Murphy, a 2 year-old mix breed, was extremely dog reactive. She would growl, lunge, and bark when she saw other dogs, and pull excessively on leash.

How we helped: We taught Murphy to be polite on leash and from there, we were able to work on her behavior toward other dogs. We helped give her confidence in everyday situations, as well as during encounters with other dogs. Instead of feeling the need to act out, Murphy learned the proper way to act and interact around other dogs. By the end of our program, Murphy’s confidence increased dramatically, her reactivity was almost completely eliminated and now her owners have the tools and knowledge to give Murphy the active lifestyle she deserves!

From the Owner: “I sent my 2 year old mixed breed for the three week board and train. I needed to help her work out her severe dog reactivity which was beyond anything I was capable of dealing with. Growling, lunging, pulling me onto the ground—it was completely unmanageable. I had already spent close to a thousand dollars on personal dog training which did absolutely nothing for us. In the end, that trainer recommended I see an expensive vet behaviorist for intervention with medications. We had to walk at obscure times of day to avoid other dogs and it was just so upsetting to see her so stressed and out of control. Miraculously, as soon as I handed the leash over to Morgan on drop off day, my dog didn’t react to any of the dogs at the facility. We got several updates during the course of the board and train stay, and we loved following her progress on the UCA Instagram. She looked happy and comfortable. When I picked my dog up, Morgan spent over an hour with us teaching us how to transition all of Murphy’s new skills to our home. I was really nervous that as soon as we got home, nothing would stick and we’d be left with all the same issues. This did not happen. Murphy has been home for several weeks and is more balanced than I ever could’ve hoped. She behaves politely toward every dog she meets and her favorite hobby is now playing with other dogs rather than growling and lunging at them. My dog’s world is infinitely bigger now that she can calmly and happily interact with other dogs. I can’t say enough how much UCA changed our lives. It was worth every penny, and I’ve already recommended UCA to other owners who are struggling to help their dogs overcome issues.”

German Shepherd: Kira

German Shepherd: Kira

Issue: Kira, a 1 year-old German Shepherd, was not listening to her owners. She was jumping, nipping, and having trouble walking on a leash.

How We Helped: During our Dog Board & Train Program, we set boundaries for Kira. We taught her a solid foundation of obedience and to listen to all of her commands through clear communication. Her confidence increased and her owner now understands how to channel all of her energy in a positive way.

From the Owner: “My 1 year old German Shepherd, Kira, went through the 2-week board and train program and I can’t say enough good things about this place. By no means did I have a bad dog I just had a dog with a lot of anxiety and no boundaries or structure. Upstate Canine Academy gave my dog the basics of being trained along with the confidence of knowing she is a good dog. When I picked her up from the 2 week stay she was a whole new dog in the best way. She listened better, knew her basic commands and found a way to channel her puppy energy. It was mind blowing really. The trainer Zach is wonderful, upon pick up he worked with Kira and I for an hour on everything she’s learned and gave me the confidence of going home with a newly trained dog. The great thing about UCA is they do lifetime follow up appointments. If you have ANY questions at all they answer them right away, you can even drop in on classes if your dog needs a tune up! I cannot thank UCA enough for giving me and my pup tools to live peacefully! FOREVER GRATEFUL 10/10 would recommend UCA to anyone!”

Siberian Husky: Whistle

Siberian Husky: Whistle

Issue: Whistle, a 4 year-old Husky from Denver CO, was completely unresponsive to his owners. He could not go out in public without being extremely vocal and uncontrollable on a leash.

How We Helped: Our Dog Board & Train Program allowed us to work in-depth on Whistle’s behavior. He needed a lot of structure and consistency, which our program was able to provide by having him stay with us for several weeks. By the end of his training, Whistle was able to behave on leash and was much less dramatic out in public. He had a clear understanding of his commands, and understood he needed to listen to his owner regardless of his stubborn husky ways.

From the Owner: “Everything about my experience with UCA was first class. My dog, Whistle is a 4 year old Siberian husky and we live in Denver, CO. I was able to get my dog to Tom and staff where Whistle did the 2 week board and train. They worked on all sorts of behaviors that typical husky owners have a hard time with off-leash recall, manners on the leash, General obedience. Whistle came back to me a very well mannered and obedient dog with all of the quirks and personality I love in him still intact! Because we were not local, we decided to have Tom fly back with us to reinforce my dogs behavior in our home. I learned more about my dog in the hours I spent with Tom than I could have imagined. It was by far one of the best things I could have ever done for my relationship with my dog!! can’t thank the team at the academy enough!!!”
